Drake
Bay Arachnids Catalogue
We are very excited to announce that in May 2018 we will be
organizing a landmark project aiming to catalogue the arachnids of Drake
Bay. This kind of endeavor has never before been undertaken in Drake
Bay, so it carries certain scientific importance.

We are very fortunate to count with the participation
of two of the world’s foremost arachnid experts: Dr. Carlos Víquez and
Dr. Darko Cotoras
As part of the Arachnids Catalogue Project we will be
offering a workshop which will show participants what it is like to be
an "Arachnologist for a Day".
The workshop will include presentations by Dr. Carlos
Víquez and Dr. Darko Cotoras on the bilology of spiders, the natural
history of some of Drake Bay's common arachnids and a taxonomy workshop
designed so show participants how spiders are identified.
The workshop will be open to the public and offered
in Spanish. You can read more about it by following this link

In terms of conservation this catalogue is of upmost
importance. Learning which creatures are here and discovering their
habitats will provide guidance as to how to protect these exceptional
and misunderstood creatures.
As the Senegalese conservationist Baba Dioum once
said: “In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only
what we understand and we will understand only what we are taught”.

Our friends at
La Paloma Lodge have kindly offered to sponsor their
lodging and meals, but beyond that we are funding the project ourselves.
We are seeking contributions to cover roundtrip transportation
from San José to Drake Bay for Dr. Carlos Víquez and Dr. Darko Cotoras as well as support for their
services.
If you are reading this, it means you are interested and we thank you in
advance for your interest in this project.
